A first-person shooter for Mac

Every frame drawn in pencil.
Every fight a sketch that moves.

Ten guns with real reloads, six maps, slides and wall-runs, takedowns from behind, and online matches with voice chat. It all renders as hatching and boiling pencil lines on paper, live, at hundreds of frames a second.

Two pencils

Grey, or in colour

Graphite draws the world in grey pencil on paper. Pastel draws the same frame in coloured pencil, with a soft wash on the sky. Same lines, same hatching; you pick the box of pencils in Settings. Drag across the picture to compare.

How it's drawn

No textures. Just pencil.

Graphite doesn't paint pictures onto its models. A custom renderer draws them every frame: outlines found from depth and surface direction, shading laid down as hatching that gets denser in shadow, and a sheet of paper whose grain catches the graphite.

The linework is redrawn twelve times a second, so it boils the way hand-drawn animation does. Land a headshot and the whole drawing flips to negative for a single frame.

  2. Hatching does the shading.
  3. Paper grain under everything.

Knives, grenades, takedowns

Get behind someone who hasn't seen you and press F. The camera swings out and you take them down by hand.

Tap V for a quick knife: combat knife, karambit, tanto, M9 bayonet or a machete that swings slowest and hits hardest. Tap G to throw a grenade, or hold it to cook the 3.2-second fuse first.

Runs on a potato

700+ fps

The potato preset drops shadows and HDR and draws the 3D at a quarter of the resolution while menus and the HUD stay sharp. On a MacBook Air (M2) at its full 2880 × 1864 it typically runs above 700 frames a second.

Gore, if you want it

Turn on gore in Settings and hits bleed instead of spraying ink. Walls take the splatter, bodies leave pools, a close headshot from a shotgun or revolver, or any sniper headshot, takes the head clean off, and blood hits your screen when you're close. It's red in Pastel and ink-black in Graphite.

Get Graphite

Graphite.dmg · 49 MB · macOS on M1 or newer · free

  1. Open Graphite.dmg and drag Graphite onto the Applications folder.
  2. Open Graphite. The first time, your Mac asks you to confirm it in System Settings → Privacy & Security. The walkthrough below shows exactly where.
  3. For online play, click the badge in the top-right of the menu and make an account. It takes a few seconds.

Opening it the first time

Your Mac will double-check

Apple automatically vets apps from the App Store and from developers in its paid programme ($99 a year). Graphite isn't in either yet, so the first time you open it macOS can't vouch for it and asks you to confirm. Nothing is wrong with the game, and you only do this once.

  1. Drag it inOpen Graphite.dmg, drag Graphite onto Applications.
  2. "Not opened": click DoneDouble-click Graphite. macOS says it couldn't verify it. Click Done, not Move to Trash.
  3. Privacy & Security → Open AnywayOpen System Settings, pick Privacy & Security in the sidebar, scroll down to Security and click Open Anyway next to Graphite.
  4. Confirm with your passwordClick Open Anyway once more, then use Touch ID or your Mac password.
  5. That's itGraphite opens, and from now on it opens like any other app.
